Georg Michael Hess, M.D., is an international specialist in the fields of orthopaedic surgery and interventional pain management. Since January 2016, Dr. Hess holds the position of Medical Director in the EuroPainClinics® team, where he is an influential contributor to the multidisciplinary team. His skills in the fields of minimally invasive and endoscopic spine surgery enriches the comprehensive foundation of knowledge for innovative and practical methods of pain management.

Dr. Hess is actively involved in the implementation of EuroPainClinics® techniques and methodologies in training programs for specialists at partner clinics and their introduction into clinical practice. As an instructor in orthopaedic surgery and advanced minimally invasive techniques, he primarily operates at international medical departments, currently also at specialised workplaces in Košice and Bratislava, Slovak Republic.


Dr. Hess studied at the University of Ulm and the medical faculty of the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf. After graduating, he began working as a resident at the Marienkrankenhaus Orthopaedic Clinic in Düsseldorf. As a resident of traumatology and orthopaedic surgery he worked at the Centre for Bone and Joint Surgery at the Gut Clinic in St. Moritz, Switzerland. He completed his senior residency at the Centre for Spine Treatment at the Orthopödische Klinik in Munich. He was also appointed chief of staff there in 2001 after completing an internship in spine surgery and interventional radiology at the l’Hôpital Saint-François d'Assise University Hospital in Quebec, Canada. From 2003, Dr. Hess focused on private practice. As a private consultant, he worked at the Orthopedic Surgery Clinic in Munich (OCM, Orthopödische Surgery München) and the private international Beta Klinik in Bonn, where he specifically focused on the area of minimally invasive surgery and interventional spine pain treatment.

For over ten years, Dr. Hess has specialized in advanced endoscopic procedures of the spine, in which he gained first-rate experience in various technical and therapeutic procedures: endoscopic discectomy, intradiscal therapy, radiofrequency denervation, vertebroplasty, and others. In his practice he also concentrates on injectable treatments in the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine, including thermotherapy of facet joints and discs. With more than 1,500 successfully executed endoscopic procedures dr. Hess ranks among the most experienced endoscopic surgeons in Europe and worldwide.


Dr. Hess is a member of many international organizations and institutions focusing on interventional and surgical treatment of the spine. From 2006 to 2015 he was president of the German Interventional Spine Society. He is a member of the German Spine Society, a member of the British Pain Society, and founding member of the World Federation of Minimal Invasive Spine Surgery and Techniques Societies. Since 2003, he has been the Master Instructor of the International Spine Intervention Society (SIS) in the United States and Europe, and a co-organizer of European SIS workshops in Amsterdam, Netherlands.


Dr. Hess enriches his medical career with various professional activities. As an international visiting surgeon he passes on his expertise regularly at prestigious symposiums, educational seminars and medical institutions, both nationally and worldwide. He is an active participant in medical congresses and workshops (SIS, EFFORT, SIS European Congress, PRC, ISMISS and others). He is the author of more than a hundred expert presentations and lectures. Dr. Hess passes on his experience as an independent author or co-author of numerous articles and studies in European and world expert journals. Dr. Hess acts as the reviewer of the prestigious specialized international journal, Pain Medicine.


Dr. Hess devotes his free time mostly to his family and sports activities.
